Memories of War part 1
Red chewing gum, Akram Zaatari (Beirut), 10'
The Other Orange ,
Hassan Choubassi ( Beirut / Amsterdam ), 40'
This Day, Akram Zaatari ( Beirut ), 90'

DARK, SELF-IRONIC ENGAGING CINEMA
FROM EASTERN EUROPE
In our program, we bring you somewhat 30 works, the best of the decades' harvest Eastern European cinema
Filmmaking in Eastern European countries became more than just a matter of culture. It is considered to be the most profound manner of expressing the nations' identity and of giving a recognisable voice that echoes abroad. It is also an attempt to reflect on the political events as well as to re-conciliate and consolidate with one another. After such turbulent decades in which most of the Eastern European countries switched from the socialist regime to democracy, during which some countries being divided in pieces, with the experience of a terrible war, economical and political crises, film stories are often being catalyst for people.
Although one can not consider Eastern European cinema as an aesthetically common notion, a specific quality distinguishes the new films coming from the different parts of this territory; a humour of self-irony and dark, pitiless contemplation on the misfortune of local heroes. A new generation of young directors is successfully combining the authors' cinema approach, trying to come up with very personal cinematic language with stories being processed smartly in a more accessible way. For example a Bosnian controversial western flavoured Go West by A. Imamovic that brings a gay story of a Muslim and Serbian boy during the last war, Romanian film Great Communist Bank Robbery by Alexandru Solomon, a witty and self-ironic docu-fiction Totally Personal by N. Begovic from Bosnia, Contact , a Macedonian saga on growing up problematic family in today's province, the funny and serious love story of a priest in Croatia What is a man without moustache by H. Hribar etc. We have also a programme of remarkable documentaries such as The Bridge That Survives by M. Erdevicki that balances a tremendous uplifting spirit with the tragic destinies of the musicians from Mostar. Or the documentary Imported crows by G. Devic in which an innocent document on birds is given as a metaphor for the political climate in Croatia . Most of the mentioned films were screened at the Rotterdam Film Festival and decorated at some other festivals with awards. Still, some films will have a Dutch premiere in our programme such as several films from Kosova where the cinema harvest was really remarkable. We will bring to the Dutch audience many interesting films from this area such as a surreal fiction Kukumi by I. Qosja and many documentaries that treat in a very interesting manner sub cultural trends from rock& roll to turbo folk.
Interestingly enough, the main theme of most of the chosen films appears to be a Quest: a quest for a warmth of a true home (country) as in an expressive short fiction To and Fro by Jasmila Zbanic from Bosnia (winner of the Berlin Festival this year) and in a poetic Bugs by Igor Ivanov from Macedonia; the quest to get the right answer to the question Whose song is this , a creative documentary full of music and irony by A. Peeva from Bulgaria. Each of these Quests is done in a very different cinematic manner but in most of them lyricism and melancholia prevail.
Our program brings some 30 fictions and documentary films that will bring closer to the Dutch audience mentality, culture and even politics and history of some of our Eastern Neighbours.
